In a surprising and emotional turn of events, Doshia Woods, the head coach of the University of Denver women’s basketball team, has officially submitted her letter of resignation to the university’s athletic department. The announcement was made just minutes after she touched down in Denver following a short personal trip, leaving players, fans, and the collegiate basketball community stunned.

Woods, who has led the Pioneers since 2020, cited “personal reflection and professional realignment” as the reasons for stepping down in her official statement.

After much prayer, thought, and conversation with my loved ones, I’ve decided that it’s time for me to step away from coaching—at least for now. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built here at DU and am so grateful for the opportunity to lead this incredible group of young women,” Woods wrote in her resignation letter, which was obtained by local media.

Doshia Woods made history when she was hired in 2020, becoming the first Black head coach in the history of DU’s women’s basketball program. Her impact extended far beyond wins and losses. Under her guidance, the Pioneers made strides in player development, academic performance, and social activism.

Woods was an outspoken advocate for racial and social justice in college athletics. She was one of the early members of the Coaches 4 Change organization and often spoke on panels about equity in women’s sports. In 2024, she received the Robin Morgan Award, which recognizes individuals who empower women and create inclusive spaces on campus.

Coach Woods brought passion, integrity, and heart to this program every single day. Her influence on the student-athletes and the DU community will be felt for years to come,” Creech said during a brief press conference.

The news of Woods’ resignation came as a shock to many of her players, several of whom took to social media to express gratitude and sadness.
