Blockbuster Deal: Red Sox wraps to Add Three-Time All-Star in Major Trade to Solidify Rotation…
In a significant move to strengthen their pitching rotation, the Boston Red Sox have acquired three-time All-Star left-hander Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox. This trade, finalized in December 2024, addresses the Red Sox’s need for a top-tier starter after missing out on high-profile free agents earlier in the offseason.
In exchange for Crochet, the Red Sox sent a package of prospects to Chicago, including catcher Kyle Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth, and pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez. Teel, ranked 25th on MLB’s top 100 prospect list, and Montgomery, ranked 54th, highlight the talent exchanged in this deal.
Crochet, who earned All-Star honors last season, posted a 3.58 ERA and a 1.068 WHIP, recording 209 strikeouts over 146 innings. Despite a 6-12 record, his performance was a bright spot in Chicago’s rotation. With Crochet under team control through 2026 and projected to earn $2.9 million in 2025, the Red Sox have secured a cost-effective addition to their pitching staff.
This acquisition comes on the heels of the Red Sox trading veteran pitcher Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves in December 2023, signaling a strategic shift towards building a younger rotation. By adding Crochet, Boston aims to solidify its starting lineup and improve upon last season’s 81-81 finish, with hopes of returning to postseason contention.
