October 18, 2024, Cape Hatteras, North Carolina Twenty people lost their life in a terrible tragedy after a large wildfire tore through the popular tourist and natural site, Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Strong winds and dry weather caused the fire, which started late on Tuesday night, to spread quickly and outgrow the firefighting crews.

Authorities said the fire began in the wooded areas close to Buxton and moved swiftly toward the seaside areas, forcing the evacuation of neighboring settlements.

The victims, who were both locals and tourists, were trying to flee when they got caught in the fire. Teams of search and rescue are currently scouring the region in an effort to find any more missing people.

The mayor of Hatteras Island, Rebecca Hensley, said, “We are devastated by the number of people lost and the damage this fire has caused. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected during this unimaginably difficult time.
