FOX Carolina’s Greenville, South Carolina A prohibition on burning has been declared by the SC Forestry Commission (SCFC) for a number of Upstate counties, effective Tuesday. Tuesday at six a.m. is when the burn ban will start. The ban is intended to lessen the workload for law police and firefighters as they attempt to clear roads of debris and evaluate damage following Hurricane Helene. “We’re issuing the ban not because there is an increased fire danger, but rather because so many of our firefighting and emergency personnel and resources are committed to hurricane-related response,” stated SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones.
A state foresters burning ban forbids all outdoor burning, including yard debris burning, in unincorporated regions, as well as burning for forestry, wildlife or agricultural purposes, otherwise known as controlled, burns. Fires used in fireplaces or fire pits, or for food preparation, are not covered by a burn ban. The burn prohibition will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
