ABBEVILLE, South Carolina — After 17 people’s houses and belongings were destroyed in a fire at an apartment building in Abbeville, the incident is being investigated. Although everyone who was in the Hickory Heights Apartments on Monday escaped unharmed, many are concerned about their future survival.

Promotion The second-story apartment building’s rear was the site of the fire, which started on the second level and quickly spread to the remaining apartments through the roof. Mayor Trey Edwards of Abbeville described the damage as “disappointing.” “It’s a tragedy, and people will have to be moved out of their home and placed somewhere else.” Just before 12:45 a.m. on Monday, according to Abbeville Fire Chief Chris Clemmons a neighbor noticed the fire and alerted dispatch. The incident required the efforts of 27 firemen from the city and county.

According to Clemmons the cause of the fire is still being looked into. The residents of the apartment where the fire originated were there at the time and promptly departed the city. Many of the others who only had the clothing on their backs managed to escape unharmed. According to American Red Cross volunteer Christine Long, “they had babies who, when they woke up, probably had nothing to wear to school.” “One young lady came out, she was in shorts, and she said this is all I’ve got.”
