In the Midlands, Eileen Kenny is well-known in the sports community, and everyone can be inspired by her accomplishments. The 75-year-old Athlone native, who will turn 75 later this year, is still winning medals and trophies in addition to competing in running. The National Half Marathon Championships for this year were held at the Charleville Half Marathon, where Eileen recently won the gold medal in the over 70 category. Eileen was a member of the Ireland Masters relay team that broke the previous world record at the end of July. With a time of 13.27, the Irish O70 4 × 800m foursome shattered the previous record by more than a minute. This year at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, Eileen took part in the 10km road race.
At the moment, Eileen has the 800, 3000, and 5000-meter outdoor track records for the Irish O70s. In addition, she runs the fastest times in her age group for 5 km (22.20) and 10 km (45.28) on the road, and her half marathon time of 1.43.33 is really remarkable. At the 2018 World Masters Track & Field Championships in Malaga, Eileen took home a bronze medal. Despite the unfortunate incident of collapsing during the race, she placed third in the 10-kilometer road race! She has participated in multiple international competitions as Ireland’s representative. Eileen moved back to Westmeath from Cork and now resides in Athlone. She was originally from Mount Temple.
