The quarterbacks who might play this Sunday at Lumen Field, Mike McDaniel of the Miami Dolphins and Mike Macdonald of the Seattle Seahawks, are coaches that Macdonald is somewhat familiar with.

After suffering a second concussion last Thursday against the Buffalo Bills, starting Tua Tagovailoa was placed on injured reserve by the Dolphins on Tuesday. As a result, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft will not play against the Seahawks in Week 3.

This information came after Miami signed Tyler Huntley, a former backup for the Baltimore Ravens, from the team’s practice squad on Monday in order to back up current backup Skyler Thompson.

With four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Thompson replaced Tagovailoa and completed 8 of 14 pass attempts for 80 yards and one sack in a 31-10 loss to the Bills.

With the Dolphins’ offensive line allowing four sacks in the 34-31 loss, Thompson completed 18 of 45 passes for 220 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions. It was his first appearance since he began at Buffalo in the wild card stage of the playoffs as a rookie in 2022.

When Huntley was a member of the Cleveland Browns, he played against the Macdonald-led Seahawks in the last preseason game. The Browns lost 37-33, but Huntley almost pulled off a 14-point comeback against Seattle in the second half.

It is possible that Huntley will play this weekend against Seattle if Thompson struggles because the former undrafted free agent, who signed with the Ravens out of Utah in 2020, has more starts than Thompson (two for Huntley and nine for Thompson). Miami selected Huntley in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Kansas State.

It is Thompson’s offense to run while Tagovailoa is out, as McDaniel made plain this week, but it does not hurt to have a quarterback with game experience against the Seahawks and might be useful even if Huntley does not snap the ball.
