Shocking news: Drake stoops shortly passed away at the age of… more details
On Tuesday, Drake Stoops’ NFL aspirations ran aground. On Tuesday, as NFL teams reduced their rosters to 53, 18 players were waived by the Los Angeles Rams, including Stoops, the son of former Oklahoma coaching legend Bob Stoops and the leading receiver for the Sooners in 2023. After not being selected by the Sooners in April, Stoops signed with the Rams and spent the summer with the team, attending rookie camps, OTAs, and the three-game preseason. Stoops made 31 starts in 62 games for the Crimson and Cream after a stellar high school career at Norman North. He finished his college career with 164 receptions, 1,876 yards, and 17 touchdowns. From the start, he was a fan favorite, and after every catch, fans would yell “STOOOOOPS.” After leading the Sooners with 84 receptions for 962 yards and 10 touchdowns in the previous season, he received first-team All-Big 12 offers. He was also a candidate for the Brandon Burlsworth Trophy, which is given to the best college football player in the nation who started his career as a walk-on. In addition, he was named Academic All-Big 12 for all six of his OU years. Stoops still has a chance of signing with other NFL teams. If no other team selects him from waivers, he may also re-sign with the Rams’ practice squad. At Oklahoma, Stoops received passes from nine different quarterbacks: He played in two games as a true freshman in 2018 and caught passes from Kyler Murray, who won the Heisman Trophy. Stoops caught passes from Heisman runner-up Jalen Hurts and backup Tanner Mordecai in all 14 games in 2019. He started seven games in 2020 and caught passes from backup Austin Kendall and Spencer Rattler. Stoops participated in ten games in 2021 and caught passes from Rattler and Caleb Williams, who would go on to win the Heisman Trophy in 2022. He caught passes from this year’s Heisman frontrunner, Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, and backup Davis Beville while he was a semifinalist for the “academic Heisman” in 2022. Additionally, in 2023, Stoops received passes from both Gabriel and Jackson Arnold, the Oklahoma starter this year. He has the option to continue playing in the UFL, where his dad’s team, the Arlington Renegades, drafted him this summer with their 10th-round pick, if he is unable to sign a contract with the NFL.
