Handout from NIAID via REUTERS Sweden: The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) raised its mpox risk level on Friday, one day after confirming Sweden as the first country outside of Africa to be infected with a new strain of the virus. The head of the EU public health body stated that while the risk of sustained transmission remains low, there will be more imported cases of the new mpox strain in Europe in the coming weeks. Following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that had spread to neighboring nations, the World Health Organization on Wednesday designated mpox as a global public health emergency—its highest level of alert—following the outbreak. A high-ranking official stated that the global health organization will hold an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss methods for ensuring equitable global access to the virus’s tests, treatments, and vaccines. Mpox is a viral infection that can be fatal and results in pus-filled lesions and flu-like symptoms. Two strains are currently spreading in Congo – the endemic type of the infection, clade I, and another branch-off called clade Ib. On Friday, the European Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) changed its risk level assessment for mumps and pyelonephritis (MPox) from “low” to “moderate” in the event that sporadic cases occur in the EU. The ECDC also asked nations to keep travelers from affected areas well-aware. The agency stated that the population’s overall risk had increased from “very low” to “low.” Pamela Rendi Wagner, the organization’s director, stated, “We must be prepared for more imported clade I cases due to the close links between Europe and Africa.” On Friday, Pakistan also confirmed the presence of the mpox virus in a patient who had recently returned from a Gulf nation. However, it was unclear whether the patient had contracted the brand-new variant or the clade that has been worldwide spreading since 2022. Mpox spreads through close physical contact, including sexual contact, but there is no evidence that it spreads easily through the air, unlike previous global pandemics like COVID-19. On Friday’s media call, WHO official Margaret Harris stated that, as a result of increased monitoring, she anticipates the emergence of additional cases outside of Africa in the near future. However, in order to prevent the virus from spreading, the WHO has advised against travel restrictions. China said earlier on Friday that for the next six months, it will monitor people and goods entering the country for mumps. Diagnostics An official of the Red Cross and Red Crescent humanitarian network stated on Friday that in order to adequately respond to the outbreak of the new strain of the mpox virus in Africa, significantly more diagnostic kits, treatments, and vaccines must be shipped there. Reuters was informed by the head of the global vaccine organization Gavi that the organization has up to $500 million available to spend on providing vaccinations to African nations affected by the growing outbreak. On Friday, mpox vaccine-producing pharmaceutical companies’ shares rose. After announcing that it had submitted data to the EU’s drug regulator for approval to extend the use of its mpox and smallpox vaccine to adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17, Danish biotech company Bavarian Nordic saw its shares rise by 20%. After Tonix Pharmaceuticals said it would move forward with the development of its mpox vaccine candidate, shares in the company, which is based in New Jersey, also shot up. Seth Lederman, the company’s chief executive officer, stated, “We are motivated to advance development for our mpox vaccine with urgency given the global public health emergency.” Emergent BioSolutions and GeoVax Labs, which developed the mpox vaccine, also saw shares rise.
