Earlier this year, New York Giants outside linebacker Kayvn Thibodeaux wasnāt shy in voicing his opinion that the team should have paid running back Saquon Barkley his worth before paying quarterback Daniel Jones.
They didnāt and the former Penn State star took his talents to Philadelphia, the Giantsā fiercest division rivals. So, how does Thibodeaux feel about that now that he has to face his former teammate twice a year?
āItās a business at the end of the day. I never really took it hard,ā he said on the Rich Eisen Show. āI reached out to (Barkley)ā¦ This is a ānot-for-longā league, so youāve got to get paid when you can.
āWeāve seen it before with past contracts and past players, so I am happy he was able to get the contract he was seeking.ā
Eisen followed up by asking Thibodeaux, who has expressed interest in learning about the business side of the game in the past, about the message received in the locker room after the team let Barkley, safeties Xavier McKinney and Julian Loveāall of whom were team captainsāleave.
āDepending on how they view the long-term contracts and the way they want to build the team, [the contracts] may or may not fit in it. Even (when) you look at me, right? We just paid Brian Burns, so me trying to ā within the next couple of years ā get a big contract, it may or may not be in the best interest of the team long term.ā
4 Commanders players entering precarious situations in 2024 – Dean Jones, RiggosRag.com
Positivity is high in Washington, but work still needs to be done by some players.
Adam Peters laid the foundations for the first stage of his roster regeneration. Dan Quinn and his outstanding staff did a tremendous job of implementing their ideas and ensuring everyone got on the same page before training camp.
This is just the start. The Commanders face a daunting journey back to contention. They seem like a long way off a Super Bowl right now, but thereās an opportunity to speed up this significant rebuild if rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels proves his worth as a franchise-caliber presence immediately.
Optimism is increasing, thereās no getting away from that. At the same time, some serious questions remain that could potentially hold them back from legitimate growth in 2024.
Thereās no doubting Tress Wayās credentials. Itās been a glittering career for the Pro Bowl punter. Heās firmly established as a locker room leader and highly respected by his peers. That does not detract from the need to return to the form of old next time around.
Way regressed last season. He wasnāt alone in that regard, but the urgency is high surrounding the popular figure if he wants to prolong his career with the Washington Commanders.
Adam Peters demonstrated a level of ruthlessness in his roster construction that wasnāt evident previously. Way might be one of the Commandersā longest-serving players, but that wonāt count for anything if the production doesnāt meet the required standards.
After catching the eye during the AFC Championship game, Allegretti logged 79 snaps during the Super Bowl with a torn UCL and shone further. This ability to fight through pain in pursuit of helping Kansas City triumph is the exact quality Adam Peters and Dan Quinn are looking to implement across the Commanders.
Allegretti is slotted to start at the left guard position based on consensus projections. Hopes are relatively high that the veteran can provide a sense of stability that was sorely lacking last time around. But he hasnāt been a prominent starting option since 2020.
This is a huge chance for Allegretti to become a long-term part of the Commandersā plans in a position of critical need. His outstanding pass protection and exceptional work ethic could serve him well, but getting off to a fast start is crucial. Especially considering the concerns surrounding Washingtonās blindside options at the left tackle spot.
Eaglesā Top Trade Candidates Ahead of 2024 Training Camp – Kristopher Knox, Bleacher Report
Philadelphia may not be done making moves this offseason.
The Philadelphia Eagles appear determined to make the 2024 season a rebound campaign. After coming only a few plays short of winning a championship in 2022, the Eagles took a major step backward last year and were ousted in the wild-card round.
However, general manager Howie Roseman has made a few key additionsāincluding Saquon Barkley, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Bryce Huff, Devin White, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJeanāwho could help get the Eagles back on a winning track.
Philadelphia may not be done adding either. The Eagles still have $24.6 million in cap space and can afford to peruse the free-agent and trade markets. If Philly wants to make a significant trade, though, it has to find something to offer up in return.
Letās be honest. The Eagles probably canāt get a lot in return for defensive back James Bradberry. Heāll turn 31 in August and is coming off a disastrous campaign in which he allowed an opposing passer rating of 114.3 in coverage.
However, with Mitchell and DeJean entering the equation, the Eagles might not have a role for Bradberry this season. Philadelphia is going to try a position switch.
āNow heās working some of the safety stuff. Iām excited about that, and his opportunity,ā head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters in early June.
The Eagles tried to trade pass-rusher Josh Sweat earlier in the offseason. Ultimately, he agreed to a restructured deal, and Philadelphia traded Haason Reddick instead. Philadelphia has no reason to simply dump Sweat, but if it is looking to secure another player in a trade, he could become a valuable bargaining chip.
Sweat is still entering the final year of his contract and isnāt a lock to stay with Philly beyond 2024. Heād undoubtedly interest teams in pass-rushing help after three straight seasons with at least 6.5 sacks.
The Eagles wonāt simply dangle Sweat on the trade market because heās a proven contributor in their defense. Aside from draft capital, though, heās arguably the best realistic trade asset Philly could offer.
