Lauren Cross, a teacher, coach, and assistant athletic coordinator at Carter High School in Dallas, stated, “The formula is always hard work; you have to put in the work to be rewarded.” She continued, “I’m just very grateful, and I’m just so proud of ShaβCarri, and I always tell her that, ‘You know, I’m always proud of you regardless of what the outcome is.” This week, Coach Cross traveled from Oregon to witness Richardson’s selection for the 2024 Olympics. According to Cross, “it was just fun to be back in Eugene, to watch her in her element, and then for her to make the Olympic team.” “It was extremely fulfilling. I was aware that her presence was planned. She has put in so much effort, overcome so much, and as you can see, she is exactly where she needs to be. Between 2014 and 2018, she coached Richardson at Carter High School. According to Cross, “she was faster than the majority of the kids when she came in, and by her senior year, she was running collegiate times.” “Excellent children always stand out, you know. It’s simply ensuring that they have the responsibility that goes with it, thus she has the responsibility and the difficult work, and that is the reason she’s able to the Olympics.” Cross said of Richardson, “I think it was always in her. Her seed was planted before she got to high school.” “She knew what she had to do because, you know, she’s always had a good work ethic.” Over time, the 24-year-old has developed into a track superstar. She has competed in a lot of races and won many of them, including the Track and Field World Championships that she won last year in Budapest. Richardson wants to add a medal from the Olympics to her resume. She was supposed to participate in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo at the age of 21, but a positive marijuana test prevented her from doing so. That is previously, and Richardson is running quick toward what’s to come. “You have to remember that three years ago, when she was just a baby and 21 years old, she was 24. Cross stated, “You know, you learn, you grow, you develop, and you know, it’s all within God’s time.” Cross described the situation as follows: “Just to see everything that she’s overcome and how hard she’s worked and she’s really earned it you know, it’s earned, nothing was ever given.” In 2023, the Dallas Free School Region named the track inside Kincade Arena at the Jesse Owens Athletic Complex after Richardson, following her best on the planet title. “This track simply has a ton of recollections, a great deal of minutes, particularly since Sha’Carri ran on this track for quite a long time,” expressed Cross about the Sha’Carri Richardson Track. Cross, who began coaching ten years ago, stated that she feels privileged to have encountered such a remarkable athlete, which is a dream that many other trainers aspire to: an Olympian. She asserts that the Dallas stadium serves as a reminder to aspiring athletes that Richardson once ran and trained on the same track and should inspire others to put in a lot of effort and pursue their goals. It simply demonstrates that anything is attainable. Cross stated, “You have someone who was in your shoes, I mean, she was literally in their shoes years ago, and you can achieve your goals if you dream big and work hard.” So it’s simple for the younger kids to see: keep working and never give up. Keep going strong, have faith in yourself, and put in a lot of effort no matter what obstacles you face. Everything will work out in the end.” On Thursday, Richardson will participate in the 200-meter qualifier in Eugene, Oregon.
