The Houston Astros’ promising right-handed pitching prospect Spencer Arrighetti is officially back on the mound tonight for Double-A Corpus Christi, marking his first appearance for an affiliate since suffering a fractured thumb earlier this season.
Arrighetti, ranked among the Astros’ top pitching prospects, has been sidelined since mid-April, when he sustained the injury during a fielding mishap in a start for Triple-A Sugar Land. After weeks of rehab and carefully managed throwing programs, he now returns to competitive action with high expectations.
The 24-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance in Houston’s farm system over the past two seasons, combining mid-to-upper 90s velocity with a deceptive delivery and solid secondary offerings. Prior to his injury, he had posted a strong spring training showing and was widely expected to make his MLB debut sometime in 2024.
“I feel good, healthy, and ready to compete again,” Arrighetti said earlier this week. “It’s been a tough few months, but I’ve used the time to focus on mechanics and getting stronger.
Tonight’s outing for the Corpus Christi Hooks is expected to be limited in pitch count as the Astros ease him back into game action. The organization is hopeful that Arrighetti can reestablish his rhythm and potentially return to Triple-A Sugar Land in the coming weeks, with a late-season call-up to Houston still a possibility if all goes well.
Houston’s rotation has seen ups and downs this season, and the front office continues to view Arrighetti as a key piece of its long-term pitching core. A strong showing in his return could accelerate his path to the majors and provide a much-needed boost to the organization’s depth.
For now, all eyes are on Corpus Christi as Spencer Arrighetti takes the next step in his journey back—one pitch, o
ne inning at a time.
