FAYETTEVILLE: According to Sam Pittman, the coach at the University of Arkansas, the plans are in place for the offense to explode when the Razorbacks’ blitz protection strategies and countermeasures completely activate, giving quarterback Taylen Green valuable time to operate.
Before Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. kickoff, opposing defenders have been using blitzes often, either to close gaps against the brutal Razorback rush game or to attack Green in the pocket. The outcomes have been inconsistent. Central matchup at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, versus Texas A&M, ranked No. 24.
With impressive scrambles and out-of-pocket sorcery, like his 58-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Sategna on the run in last week’s 24-14 victory at Auburn, Green has helped to relieve some of the strain. However, a few have gotten home or blown up plays, which has resulted in three sacks in the last three games and forced throws that weren’t scheduled.
While some of the sacks have forced the Hogs to miss field goals, others have made Kyle Ramsey’s field goals—who is 5 of 9 this season—from inside 51 yards more difficult.
At Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Green completed 16 of 23 throws to start the season. Against Oklahoma State, he completed 26 of 45 passes for 416 yards. However, in the last two games, he’s won over Auburn and Alabama-Birmingham by completing 23 of 53 throws (43.4%) with 3 interceptions and 1 touchdown pass.
When several plays last week had a little bit of timing error, Green led receivers Andrew Armstrong, Var’Keyes Gumms, and Rodney Hill into jaw-dropping collisions for pass breaks.
“I think Taylen’s got to be better — and he’ll tell you that — but we’ve got to be better around him,” Pittman stated. “We’re not exactly winning one-on-one, but our defense isn’t great right now. Once more, it’s not obstructing the top five most hazardous in
Every day, we’re working on that,” stated Green. “We’re remaining put and will just carry on with our current course of action. It will be fruitful.
“I’m confident that Drew, Ty (Broden), and the other receivers and tight ends will keep focusing on the passing game because I think we have what it takes to be the top team in the nation. That is what we are going to display going forward.
“If you are Taylen Green, you’re back there expecting that these guys are blocked,” Pittman continued. Therefore, the fact that we failed to protect the quarterback during Saturday’s offensive football game is likely the most worrying aspect.
As the players of the game are well known,
