A captain from the North East intends to spend 2025 sailing the globe aboard a yacht he built from the ground up without any prior expertise. Adam Waugh, of Bolam, Northumberland, has been building a 19-foot sailing boat by hand for the past two years. He has never built a single component of a boat before. He is scheduled to sail the boat to Portugal in seven months, after which he will compete in a global competition.

He learned about the Mini Globe Race and made the decision to accept the challenge. Up to thirty boat builders compete in the race, which follows the travels of author John Guzwell, who wrote about his trips around the globe in the 21-foot wooden sailing vessel TrekAdam stated: “I thought I can’t think of anything better to do so I thought I better have a go at it.” Adam learned about the race via a friend. “People either say you must be mad, or you’re insane,” the sixty-year-old continued. Alternatively, they exclaim, “Wow, that sounds amazing. Can I come look at it?” It elicits highly intense responses.
