Judge Juan Merchan did the right thing for the wrong reasons by delaying former President Donald Trump’s sentencing until after the 2024 election. Even though the four-page letter to counsel that he made public today states that Merchan is delaying his ruling on Trump’s immunity claim until November, this is evident from his setting of a sentencing day for Nov. 26. 12. Trump is correct, in my opinion, when he says that carrying out the scheduled sentence on September 18 would have been unwarranted interference in the 2024 election. In the final stages of the presidential campaign, Trump, a major party nominee, needed to be sentenced for no legal reason. Also, take note of the fact that, prior to today’s postponement, Judge Merchan appeared determined to sentence Trump just as early voting in Pennsylvania, the most important battleground state, begins on September 16th. Judge Merchant holds off on Trump’s speech until after the election. Even though Trump was found guilty of 34 felony offenses, the business records offense is usually only a misdemeanor in New York, and Alvin Bragg, Manhattan’s most progressive prosecutor, usually doesn’t even charge him with anything. Even though 34 counts seem like a lot, Bragg acted unethically by charging each piece of paper as a separate four-year felony, which added up to 136 years of potential prison time! This is why the number is so high, even though it should only have been a few.
