The 2025–2026 college basketball season is right around the corner, and Michigan State fans now have even more to be excited about. On Sunday morning, the Michigan State Spartans officially released their full schedule for the upcoming season. The announcement comes with high expectations, as the Spartans look to build on last season’s NCAA Tournament success and return to national prominence.
Led by legendary head coach Tom Izzo, entering his 31st season at the helm, Michigan State’s program continues to represent consistency, toughness, and postseason potential. This year’s schedule will put that to the test, featuring a challenging mix of high-profile non-conference games and a brutal Big Ten slate.
The Spartans will start the season with a bang as they take on the Duke Blue Devils in the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden. This annual blue-blood showdown has become a staple of early-season college basketball and often sets the tone for the year.
Other non-conference highlights include a highly anticipated rematch against North Carolina as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, a neutral-site battle with Arizona in Las Vegas, and a home contest against up-and-coming program Houston.
These games help us figure out who we are early,” said Coach Izzo. “If we want to be among the best, we have to play the best.
Michigan State’s conference schedule is equally daunting. The Spartans will play home-and-away series against in-state rival Michigan, as well as against Indiana, Purdue, and Illinois. Other key games include visits to Iowa, Wisconsin, and Maryland—all of whom are projected to be NCAA Tournament teams.
The most anticipated matchups are, of course, the rivalry games against the Wolverines. Michigan will host the Spartans on January 25 in Ann Arbor, with the return game scheduled for February 23 in East Lansing. These games are always high-stakes and often help determine the conference hierarchy.
The Spartans will play 17 home games this season at the Breslin Center, where the fan support remains among the most passionate in the country. Key home games include contests against Purdue, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Rutgers. With a strong home crowd and a deep roster, Michigan State aims to maintain its dominant form on its home court.
With veteran leaders like A.J. Hoggard returning and breakout stars like Malik Edwards and Jayden Simmons ready to take the next step, Michigan State is viewed as a potential Final Four contender. The team’s mix of experience and youth makes it one of the most intriguing squads in the country.
We’ve got a lot to prove, and a lot of potential,” said Izzo. “But potential means nothing unless we earn it every day.
