Jahmai Mashack has officially ended a 72-year drought by becoming the first Tennessee basketball player to receive the prestigious Torchbearer Award since 1953. The Torchbearer Award is the highest honor given to seniors at the University of Tennessee, recognizing exceptional academic performance, leadership, and contributions to the community. Mashack, a senior guard for the Tennessee Volunteers, was honored for his outstanding achievements both on and off the court.
Beyond his basketball skills, Mashack has made a significant impact through his leadership and service. He has served as chair of the SEC Men’s Basketball Leadership Council and has been involved with the NCAA Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee’s Student-Athlete Engagement Group. His community service work includes helping raise over $1 million for the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee and personally delivering food to thousands in need.
Mashack is also known for his defensive prowess on the court, earning a spot on the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year watchlist. His combination of athletic talent, academic excellence, and dedication to service embodies the Volunteer spirit, making him a deserving recipient of the Torchbearer Award.
