Jannik Sinner ended his breakthrough 2020 ATP Tour season with a milestone victory on Saturday, as he defeated Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3) to capture his maiden ATP Tour trophy at the Sofia Open.

“It was a very difficult match today. I played well especially in the first set. Then I started to struggle a little bit. He was playing maybe better than me. It is a nice feeling winning the first title. Like last year, in the same week – a November week. And it is good. I felt well the whole week here. It is beautiful to play here. The crowd was amazing. It is a nice achievement,“ Sinner started the last virtual press-conference in Sofia.

About playing another player who never won an ATP title yet – Vasek Pospisil, he said: “It is never easy to play against him. There are some games when he is serving well and you can’t touch any ball. I was up 1-0 and a break. You know, there are games that you play not the way you wanted to do. I just tried to stay positive. It was not that easy. I felt the pressure. Even before the match a little bit. I am very happy about the result.”

“It is always special when you win tournaments,” said Sinner. “I felt well this week. It is special. Playing finals like this, 7-6 in the third… is always tough. But when you win, it is an even better win than winning 6-1, 6-1… I am happy about the match, how I tried to stay there every point and I think it is a very special week for me.”

“It is a great feeling ending the year with a tournament win,” said Sinner. “Now I think the hard work is going to start once more… I hope I am going to start even better next year than I did this year.”

Asked if he will remember this week in Sofia, where he lifted his first ATP trophy, Jannek said: “I hope first of many title. I think always when you win first tournament it is special. Here, especially with these difficult times, when everyone is struggling, it is nice to see first of all the crowd. I liked the court. Very kind people all around. So for me, I felt like home here. It was very nice for me and for sure I will remember that. Thank you for the tournament! I didn’t expect that. I felt the crowd behind me. That is very nice and special. I saw a lot of kinds all around. They were watching tennis and I was trying to inspire them somehow. It was great. I don’t know if I am going to be future No 1, but I am just trying to be an example for them. Which for me is very important. Everything was a special week for me, and I hope, for the crowd – too.”
