JUST IN: Former Iowa Athletics Director Bob Bowlsby will be inducted into the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame

In a celebratory moment for Hawkeye history and leadership, former Iowa Athletics Director Bob Bowlsby has been included in the 2025 class of the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fameby. Announced on June 5, he is one of eight esteemed inductees to be honored during the ceremony scheduled for Friday, August 29 at the Feller Club Room in Carver‑Hawkeye Arena—on the eve of Iowa’s football season opener against Albany .

 

Bowlsby, Iowa’s tenth men’s athletics director, served from June 1991 until 2006—arguably one of the most transformative eras in modern Hawkeye athletics . During his tenure, he stewarded the historic merger of the men’s and women’s athletic departments into a unified, 24‑sport entity, a progressive move highlighting equality and strategic growth .

 

Bowlsby’s legacy is also defined by the key hires he orchestrated—most notably Kirk Ferentz as head football coach and Tom Brands in wrestling—decisions that have reverberated through the program’s ongoing success . Under his vision, projects exceeding $100 million took shape, with the Kinnick Stadium renovation (an $87 million upgrade) standing out as a crowning achievement .

 

Even before and after his Hawkeye era, Bowlsby maintained national prominence. He was honored as NACDA’s Central Regional and Sports Business Journal’s National Athletics Director of the Year in 2001–02 . President George W. Bush appointed him to the Commission on Opportunities in Athletics (2002–03), and he chaired the NCAA Basketball Tournament Selection Committee—overseeing both the 2004 and 2005 Final Fours .

 

Following Iowa, Bowlsby led Stanford’s athletics program (2006–12) with stellar performance and then served as Big 12 Conference commissioner from 2012–22—the position from which he recently retired . His lifetime of contributions earned him prior recognitions: inducted into Northern Iowa’s Hall of Fame (for his 1983–91 AD service) and honored as MSU Moorhead’s Sports Hall of Fame member .

 

Bowlsby’s 2025 inclusion is part of a distinguished eight-member class that also celebrates standout Hawkeyes across the athletic spectrum, including Brandon Scherff (football), Lisa Cellucci (field hockey), Justin Austin (track), Lisa Birocci Banse (softball), Elena Callas King (golf), Brad Smith (wrestling), and Tom Williams (swimming and diving) .
